The Generalitat will introduce the CO2 tax later this year
CATALONIA / SPAIN: As the first region in Spain, Catalonia will pass a CO2 tax before the end of next year and ask motorists to pay - not too short, depending on the vehicle. Affected will be normal cars, small vans and motorcycles. Electric vehicles are of course spared.
It will pay only from next year in November, but for the period 2019. This year, the upper limits are still kept quite high and only from an output of 120 grams of CO2 per kilometer taxes are due. From 2010, however, it will have to be neatly laced with emissions of 95 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. Divided is the tax collection in five stages from 0 € to 127 € for 2019 and a maximum of 176 € for 2020. So who owns a larger car with appropriate emissions, will probably come in the highest class.
As mentioned above, levies are always collected in November for the previous year, ie in November 2020 for the year 2019. Apparently, the Generalitat wants to collect the new taxes for the full year 2019, although the bill is expected to be passed only at the end of the year - something that is strange and will certainly raise many questions and complaints.
It is expected that in 2019 it will generate revenues of around 40 million euros and for 2020 80 million euros, with around 3,600 owners affected. The money should primarily benefit the conservation and if that happens, the tax is well spent.
But whether the owners of large and heavy vehicles can be impressed by this tax, is an open question.
The automotive industry is taking a storm against the new law and rightly explains that from now on two ecotaxes would have to be paid in Catalonia - once at registration and then every year as a normal tax.
